John,
I don't know what "needs almost everything" means, but let's assume the worst.
10 years ago, you could get a pretty nice AW series (1st generation) for $1,200 - $1,400 ...
Today, depending on how nice, they seem to run $8,000 - $14,000. (I've seen nicer for more)
Today, the parts marketplace for these cars has become, in my opinion, quite pricey ...
Toyota has pretty much stopped making parts for them! So, study parts availability and
pricing before you start ... There are lots of aftermarket and reproduction suppliers
that make parts available, but investigate before paying any price on the car.
OLD MAN THOUGHT! - "Sure, repairing, rebuilding is like an installment plan, but better
because your initial investment is not at risk - this method personalizes the car for exactly
what you want, but realize you will likely never recover your investment."
I cannot think of any of the AW's to avoid or any quirks unique to any year. Between '86
and '87 there were some minor cosmetic changes and some mechanical changes.
I am only familiar with Southern models, but depending on area, rust can be an issue.
If you would consider driving all the way across the country and trailering one back, I have
two for sale. I built them for my daughters who lost interest, and as I have aged, I no longer
find them suitable.
'87 5 speed, T-top $4,200 and/or '86 auto sunroof $3,600
Both are PW, PL, A/C, triangle wheels - other wheels available
DSCN2124 - is a staged picture of me and a friend with the '86
DSCN1619b - is the '86 - upgraded to '87 tail-lamps and center panel
DSCN1620b - is the '87
DSCN1616 - is both cars
They sat out while I waited for my daughters to come, then I built a building to keep them
dry and all - both need routine servicing (fluids, filters, fuel system flush- based on time) a
battery and a serious cleaning ... if anyone wants more info, just ask ...
Sales numbers are not accessory specific - Within the United States and Canada, production for the AW series was 31,352 for '86 and 6,195 for Japan ...

John,
I ran across this ... Lists things to look for ...
Most of these I had forgotten, as (to me) they are so minor ...
If you have any questions about any, just ask ... or check the database ...
